The positive association between a low BMI and the chance of loss of life was strongest for death from causes apart from cardiovascular disease or cancer. The total results of analyses stratified relating to smoking status were, in general, in keeping with the pattern shown in Figure 1, although stage estimates for some BMI categories were not significant, owing to the tiny sample . The strikingly positive association between low BMI and loss of life from causes apart from cardiovascular disease or cancers was primarily the consequence of deaths because of respiratory diseases . After exclusion of deaths from respiratory diseases, the positive association with low BMI was substantially reduced. The association between BMI and death from respiratory illnesses was related in smokers and non-smokers .
